Riding Hai Van Pass: what to expect
A first-timer guide to Vietnam’s most famous coastal pass.

Hai Van Pass connects Hue and Da Nang over a ridge of the Truong Son mountains, and it is usually the first taste of real mountain riding on our tours. The road is well paved, with wide, predictable curves rather than tight hairpins, which makes it a good warm-up before the smaller roads further north.
Morning departures give the best chance of clear views over Lang Co Bay before cloud builds up over the ridge. The old French bunkers near the summit are worth ten minutes on foot, and the descent into Da Nang opens onto the city and China Beach in one long view.
Riders on our Da Nang 5 day loop and Da Nang to Hanoi routes cross it on day one.
